The Story: Get shot down get a mustache ride
You're a Pedro... F-heroic. Military mottos are as cliche as they are ubiquitous. They seek to inspire, through a call to duty or violence upon the enemy. It is the rare motto that rises from slogan to ethos. The words of the air force CSAR motto form such an ethos: "These things we do that others may live." The idea that our nation would send the willing to save a desperate few defies logic. Yet the decades of dangerous service by these crews testifies their commitment to this very idea. The heroic daring and selflessness epitomizes the best qualities of America.Time and again, in war, or natural calamity, crews charge unhesitatingly into the midst of death's rage to save the desperate few.
"Pedro was just a call sign," said Lt. Col. Steve Gregg, 83rd ERQS commander. "It started in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, flying the old HH-43s. Because the aircrews were so quick to rescue the guys in southern Vietnam, the Pedro call sign became synonymous with being saved."
